Hi Folks

As an offshoot to this site (well, not really an offshoot, more a Kriegsmarine-related story) I am going to do some low-level research on the auxiliary cruiser Atlantis, skippered by the legendary Bernhard Rogge. I had read a brief piece on Rogge in Gordon Williamson's anthology Aces of the Reich, but yesterday I saw a documentary on UK History that told the story of the role played by Atlantis in shaping Japanese strategy in the far east, for which he was only one of three Germans to receive a samurai sword from the Emperor (the other two were Goering and Rommel).

Rogge was the only man to receive one of the Kriegsmarine's highest awards, the Hilfskreuzer Kriegsabzeichen (Merchant Raider Badge) with Diamonds, and went on to become an admiral in the postwar Bundesmarine.

If anyone has any information, I'd be very interested in hearing from you!

Cheers
The Kaleun

The "Atlantis" was the most succesfell of the Hilfskreuzer, she captured or sunk 22 ships (in the total of 145,960 tonns) , one of those ships was the "Automedon" after it's sinking by "Atlantis" it's was discover that she contain the defence plans of Singapore, this information was giveing to the Japanese and for this action Rogge receive his samurai sword, the end of the "Atlantis" came in November 1941 when it's was sunk by the "Devonshire" luckily at the time she was meeting with U-126 in order to fuel it, U-126 was able to pick up the survivours (with the help of U-124 and U-129) and return them home.

Bernhard Rogge himself was highly praise for his humance treatment of POW, in addition to the awards that you listed he also receive on 30.03.62 the Großes Verdienstkreuz des Bundesverdienstordens der BRD after his retire from the Bundesmarine.

Excellent Herr Kaleun, good luck in your research. It sounds like a very good subject to delve into.
