I autistic and use a service dog for things that many people take for granted. I wear headphones to help me get over stimulated less easily, but that means that I can hear people calling to me/approaching me, or even a car coming down the street when I about to cross it in my neighborhood, as some examples. My service dog is a Shiba Inu named Kiri. She alerts me to people trying to get my attention or approaching me. She even make sure they don get too close to me by performing a "down" between me and a person that too close, allowing me to take a step or two back without the person being able to easily encroach on my space without stepping around her. She sits and looks both ways before crossing the street, checking it for cars, not allowing me to step out in front of one. She alerts me to the fact that I nearing my "meltdown point" before I meltdown, allowing me to excuse myself before having an embarrassing incident that will require explanation/apologies later. She even remembers where I parked my car, where the exit in any given building is, etc.
