ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel
wont start in Buffalos season finale at New England
because of a small tear in a left knee ligament that will
not require surgery. Coach Doug Marrone revealed the
nature of Manuels injury for the first time after
practice Friday. Backup Thad Lewis will start Sunday.
"The decision process was injury-related, meaning that he
was not able to do the things at 100 per cent that, in my
opinion, we need to do to win the game," Marrone said.
"So at the end of the day, I made the decision to put him
out there for no other reason because I thought Thad
would give us the best chance to win this game with EJs
injury not progressing." Marrone said Manuel has a "small
tear" in his lateral collateral ligament, which the
first-round draft pick hurt in a 27-20 win at
Jacksonville on Dec. 15. The tear is regarded as a minor
knee injury. Lewis will start after taking all team snaps
in practice Friday. Manuel could still be active and is
listed as questionable. The Bills (6-9) have already been
eliminated from playoff contention but have a chance to
win three straight for the first time since opening the
2011 season 3-0. The Patriots (11-4) have already
clinched the AFC East and can secure a first-round bye.
The injury is the latest setback for Manuel, who is 4-6
this season. He missed four straight games after
spraining his right knee in a 37-24 loss at Cleveland on
Oct. 3. Manuel also missed the final two preseason games
after hurting his left knee. Its a setback for Marrone as
well, who a week earlier had said he was "110 per cent"
confident Manuel would play against the Patriots. Marrone
began backing off that comment Monday, when he declined
to announce a starter. Manuel and Lewis split practice
time Tuesday and Thursday, before Marrone determined the
injury was limiting Manuels lateral mobility. Lewis is
listed as probable because of an injury to his left, non-
throwing shoulder, which he hurt in a 19-0 win against
Miami last weekend. He has a 2-2 record and has thrown
for three touchdowns and three interceptions since his
promotion from the practice squad in early October. "I
feel very fortunate. Im excited about the challenge,"
Lewis said. "Its just another opportunity to go out and
make the best of it and help this team get a win." The
Patriots will be playing Lewis for the first time, after
facing Manuel in their season-opening 23-21 road win. "I
know hes been playing good. I know he throws the ball
down the field," Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib said.
"They get a lot of explosive plays when hes in the game,
because hes not afraid to throw the ball down the field."
Against Miami, Lewis completed a 57-yard pass up the left
sideline to Robert Woods despite Buffalo being backed up
inside its own 10. The Patriots are expected to play
without safety Devin McCourty, who hasnt practiced since
sustaining a concussion in a 41-7 win at Baltimore on
Sunday. That opens the door for rookie Duron Harmon to
start. The Patriots will face a Bills running game that
ranks second in the NFL with 2,138 yards, led by C.J.
Spiller and Fred Jackson. "They do have a lot of
weapons," Harmon said. "So we know were going to have our
hands full." The Bills placed safety Aaron Williams on
injured reserve and promoted receiver Cordell Roberson
off the practice squad. Williams had already been ruled
out because of a rib injury. Roberson provides the team
with depth at receiver with starter Stevie Johnson
missing his second straight game. Johnson has been
excused after the death of his mother, whose funeral was
held Friday in Northern California. ------

Although Spain could still advance out of the group
stage, the game may have signalled the end of the run by
a generation of Spanish stars whose quick passing, "tiki-
taka" style delighted the world and helped them win the
last three major tournaments.

. There are surprises among the Vezina
candidates, but most of the others are standard top-tier
performers, even if the two Hart Trophy runners-ups have
never been quite as good as they have been through the
first half of the season.

.com) - Charlie Davies netted a pair of
goals, including the series-winner on Saturday, as the
New England Revolution battled the New York Red Bulls to
a 2-2 draw in the second leg of the Eastern Conference
Championship at Gillette Stadium and advanced to MLS Cup
final via a thrilling 4-3 aggregate victory.Toronto, ON
(SportsNetwork.com) - Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored a
short-handed goal five seconds into the third period --
yes, five seconds -- to kindle a rally that lifted the
Arizona Coyotes to a 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs
on Thursday. The Coyotes snapped a seven-game losing
streak and extended Torontos skid to eight games. Ekman-
Larssons goal, which tied a franchise record for quickest
to open a period, came from beyond center ice after Lauri
Korpikoski won the faceoff. Martin Hanzal netted the go-
ahead goal 3:42 later and Sam Gagner scored on a power
play later in the period as Arizona broke out of an 0-5-2
slump. Mike Smith had 24 saves in the win, which also
stopped a five-game road losing streak for the Coyotes,
who are in the midst of an eight-game trek. It was their
first win away from home since Dec. 23 in Edmonton. Phil
Kessel scored in the first period for the Maple Leafs,
who are 0-7-1 in their last eight games and 3-15-1 in
their last 19. The Coyotes peppered Jonathan Bernier, who
stopped 32 shots in two periods but allowed three goals
on 13 in the third. After the second period we thought we
deserved a better fate in the game, said Coyotes Dave
Tippett. We had created a lot of chances. The next one
was unexpected. Phoenix opened the third period down a
man after Brendan Shinnnimin was called for an
interference penalty with 1:37 remaining in the
second.dddddddddddd But Korpikoski drew the faceoff back
to his left and Ekman-Larsson flipped the puck toward the
Toronto net. It knuckled, bouncing inside the far post to
beat a surprised Bernier, who was too late with his
glove. We planned that all the way, Tippett said with a
smirk. It tied Doug Smails decades-old franchise record
for fastest goal to open a period. Smail scored five
seconds into the first period for the original Winnipeg
Jets in a Dec. 20, 1981, game against St. Louis. While it
was the fastest short-handed goal to start a period in
NHL history, three players have scored in four seconds,
including Toronto forward James van Riemsdyk, who was the
last to do it in a game against Philadelphia last March
28. Hanzal scored after taking a faceoff when the puck
went into the left corner and Sam Gagner threw it back to
him near the net. Gagners power-play goal came on a
deflection of Keith Yandles shot from the point. Game
Notes Arizona beat Toronto 3-2 at home on Nov. 4 after
being swept in the two-game series last season ... The
Coyotes continue their eight-game road trip on Saturday
in Ottawa ... The Maple Leafs start a three-game road
trip Saturday in Philadelphia.
