PITTSBURGH -- The National League MVP doesnt play
favourites when it comes to hot streaks. Neither do the
Pittsburgh Pirates, who rode Andrew McCutchen to another
win Wednesday. McCutchen homered and reached base four
times and the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 at rainy
PNC Park on Wednesday night. McCutchen is batting .462
during a seven-game hitting streak and has 12 extra-base
hits during 10 June games. "I dont compare (career-best
stretches)," McCutchen said. "Im not big on that. Im just
seeing the ball hitting the ball. Im in a spurt where Im
feeling really good right now." So are the Pirates, who
have taken two of the first three games of the series
with their NL Central rivals. Pittsburghs Brandon Cumpton
(2-2) pitched five effective innings, and the offence
pounded Cubs starter Jason Hammel (6-4) for 11 hits in
five innings, snapping his streaks of 14 1-3 innings
without allowing a run and 52 innings without allowing a
homer when McCutchen hit his 10th in the first. McCutchen
also had a single and walked twice. "Hes hot," Pirates
manager Clint Hurdle said. "When he gets his pitch, hes
not missing." Luis Valbuena likewise continued his recent
strong hitting with three hits for last-place Chicago,
which has lost three of four after a season-best five-
game winning streak. The games first pitch was delayed 1
hour, 38 minutes because of a severe thunderstorm that
began sweeping through downtown Pittsburgh about an hour
before the scheduled start time. Rain fell again during
the sixth inning. McCutchens fly ball landed more than a
row into the left-field seats -- but it almost became an
extra-long out when leftfielder Chris Coghlan leaped into
the stands. He landed in the seats and said he had a read
on the ball but that a fan outmanoeuvred him for it.
"Best non-catch effort Ive ever seen," Cubs manager Rick
Renteria said. "I would have went there and shook his
hand myself if he caught that ball," McCutchen said. The
Pirates Gregory Polanco went 1 for 5 with an RBI
groundout a day after his much-hyped major league debut
Tuesday. Making his sixth start of the season and fourth
since being given a regular rotation spot, Cumpton
allowed two runs on five hits and two walks with five
strikeouts. On his final pitch, he struck out Nate
Schierholtz swinging with the bases loaded. "Its
something I need to work on, getting through the fifth
and sixth innings," Cumpton said. "It was a good
experience, a real confidence booster for me." Justin
Wilson, Tony Watson, Mark Melancon and Jason Grilli
followed with a hitless inning each. Grilli earned his
10th save of the season during what was his 400th career
appearance. Hammel had won two previous starts against
the Pirates this season and entered Wednesday with the
second-best WHIP in the majors (0.88). He allowed 14
baserunners Wednesday. "It was rough," Hammel said with a
laugh. "A lot of hits given up. Up in the zone. Obviously
could have been better strikes thrown, but I battled
through. It could have been a lot worse - 11 hits through
five innings? Its amazing they only put up four." Hammel
was spared a worse line by some poor baserunning by
Pittsburgh, which hit into two peculiar double plays and
had another runner thrown out at third during the seventh
inning after Hammel was out of the game. The Pirates
Starling Marte had two hits - including an RBI single in
the fifth inning - but also was thrown out on the
basepaths for the third time in two games when he was
picked off third following a Travis Snider pop-up behind
home plate in the fifth. The Cubs briefly tied the game
at 2 in the second when John Bakers single drove in
Valbuena and Nate Schierholtz scored on a groundout.
Notes: Before the game, the Pirates places LHP Francisco
Liriano on the disabled list because of a strained left
oblique that caused him to leave his start Tuesday in the
fourth inning. . The Cubs on Wednesday announced they
signed their first-round draft pick, Indiana University
catcher/outfielder Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber, the No. 4
overall selection, will report to the organizations
short-season Class A affiliate in Boise, Idaho. . Pirates
2B Josh Harrison was removed from the game for a pinch
hitter during the third inning because of discomfort in
his left ankle. . A fireworks display - from the nearby
annual Pittsburgh arts festival - rumbled PNC Park for
several minutes during the fourth inning. . Pittsburghs
Thursday scheduled starter, RHP Edionson Volquez, is 5-0
in his career against the Cubs. Chicagos probable
starter, RHP Jeff Samardzija, has a 1.90 ERA in 71 career
innings against the Pirates, including seven shutout
innings on opening day at PNC Park.

five-match winning streak.CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- LeBron James
stripped the ball at midcourt, raced the length of the
floor and lifted off for a powerful one-handed dunk.
Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, seated on the Charlotte
bench, could only look on helplessly. James was taking
over and the Miami Heat, well, they were starting to look
like the Miami Heat of the past two seasons. Unlike the
first two games of the series, James made sure this game
wouldnt be close. James had 30 points and 10 rebounds,
and the Heat easily defeated the Bobcats 98-85 Saturday
night to take a 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference first
round. Dwyane Wade added 17 points for the Heat, who can
close out the best-of-seven series Monday night. "We were
locked in on what needs to be done and our keys to win
this game," James said. James went 10 of 18 from the
field and pushed his record to 18-0 against the Bobcats
since joining the Heat in 2010. Miami has won 19 straight
overall against Charlotte. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said
his players took a "professional approach" following a
101-97 win Game 2 that came down the wire, dedicating
themselves to fixing their mistakes rather than being
satisfied with the win. Now he said the challenge is
closing out the Bobcats. "You dont want a series to go
longer than it needs to," Spoelstra said. Al Jefferson
finished with 20 points -- 15 in the first quarter -- for
the Bobcats, who are still searching for the first post-
season win in franchise history. After trailing most of
the first half, the Heat took control in the final four
minutes of the second quarter. Mario Chalmers gave Miami
a 42-40 lead on a 3-pointer, Norris Cole hit a 5-foot
bank shot and then another 3 from the left wing helping
the Heat close the half on a 16-4 run. Miami made 8 of
their first 11 3-pointers. The half, which had started
with so much energy and promise for the Bobcats, ended
with a colossal mistake by guard Gerald Henderson. With
the clock winding down, he turned the ball over in the
backcourt with 2 seconds left and then fouled James while
the Miami forward was attempting a 3-pointer. James made
the Bobcats pay by sinking three free throws with 0.2
left on the clock to give the Heat a 58-46 advantage at
the break. "We butchered the last three-and-a-half
miinutes of the first half," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford
said.dddddddddddd Said James: "I put it on my shoulders
tonight to close out the quarter the right way. And I
think that resulted in the way we started the third
quarter." The second half was all Miami. James, who was
booed loudly almost every time he touched the ball, hit a
key 3-pointer and had the breakaway dunk off a steal from
Josh McRoberts in the third quarter to help push the lead
to 26 midway through the third. The Bobcats never mounted
a series challenge after that point. James has never lost
a first-round series with his teams in Cleveland and
Miami going a combined 8-0. There was some intrigue
entering the game. James was outspoken on Friday after
taking an elbow to the throat from McRoberts in Game 2,
although no flagrant foul was called on the floor. The
two made contact early in the first quarter when James
drove baseline and McRoberts attempted to take a charge,
but officials called a blocking foul. James made the shot
but missed the ensuing free throw. McRoberts walked away
after the foul clapping his hands, refusing to get upset
by a call that could have easily gone the other way.
Slowing down Jefferson was crucial for the Heat. He hit 7
of 9 shots to start the game helped Charlotte take a 27-
23 lead after the first quarter. By the middle of the
second quarter, Bobcats fans, wearing all white, began
chanting "M-V-P M-V-P" as Jefferson shot free throws. But
Charlottes enthusiasm was short-lived as James and the
Heat began flexing its muscles. Jefferson was held to
just five points in the final three quarters in large
part due to Chris Bosh. "They just got up in the passing
lanes and made it hard for us to get Al the ball,"
Clifford said. "Youve got to give them credit. Their
defence was terrific." The Heat also turned up the
pressure on point guard Kemba Walker, trapping him out
near half court. The Heat forced 14 turnovers. NOTES: The
soldout crowd of 19,633 was the largest ever to see a
Bobcats game at Time Warner Cable Arena. ... Bobcats
owner Michael Jordan took in the game from the end of the
bench. ... James has scored at least 20 points in all
three playoff games ... The Heat are 19-7 in the playoffs
over the past two seasons
