NEW YORK, N.Y. - Michael Sam has been selected the winner
of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. The Missouri defensive
end, who likely will be drafted by an NFL team this
weekend, will receive the award given to individuals who
transcend sports at The 2014 ESPYs on July 16. Sam, the
SEC Defensive Player of the Year, has announced that he
is gay, making him set to become the first openly gay
player in the NFL. ESPN is honouring Sam for "his courage
and honesty that resonates beyond sports." "Im very
honoured to be presented with the Arthur Ashe award," he
said. "It is about courage. "You know I dont think there
is anything courageous I did. I look forward to when we
can live life in a world when gays dont have to come out
in public." Sam said he has received support from
athletes in all sports, "from football to basketball to
softball to soccer, everyone." "I am thrilled to be
living in a time when you can be accepted for how you
live." Sam joins a prestigious list of winners ranging
from Jim Valvano, the first recipient in 1995, to
Muhammad Ali, Billie Jean King, Cathy Freeman, Nelson
Mandela and Pat Summitt. The award, of course, is named
for Ashe, the inspirational tennis star who died in 1993
after contracting AIDS from a blood transfusion. After
learning he had the disease, Ashe campaigned to raise
awareness about AIDS. "Arthur always believed in and
practiced leading by example," said Ashes widow, Jeanne
Moutoussamy-Ashe. "When Michael Sam announced that he is
gay, he courageously stepped forward to engage an issue
that still remains a pervasive problem in many
professional sports. Michael has displayed true
leadership both on and off the field." Sam is one of
eight children from Hitchcock, Texas. Two of his siblings
have died and one disappeared and has not been found.
Maura Mandt, executive producer of the ESPYs, calls Sam a
"humble guy who isnt looking for any accolades." "In
deciding to give Michael this honour, while his
courageous act of coming out is a part of it, the story
is about the life he led growing up," Mandt added. "A man
who has consistently lived his life with integrity, is
never afraid of living this truth."

NORRIS COLE (Heat): Its funny, you watch a guy play and
now really produce and it just jumps off the page at you
- why? You put a young player with potential in a winning
environment where there is veteran leadership,
outstanding coaching and management and a way that things
are done and its a wonderful environment for growth,
improvement in a climate of constant accountability and
expectation of achievement/production.

Toronto dropped a 7-2 decision to the Minnesota Twins on
Wednesday afternoon, with only a pair of late runs
preventing a second straight shutout loss. Josh

seventh as the Twins took the rubber game of the three-

-- The Montreal Canadiens traded defenceman Raphael Diaz
to the Vancouver Canucks on Monday in exchange for
forward Dale Weise. The 28-year-old Diaz had 11 assists
and 12 penalty minutes in 46 games for the Canadiens this
season. The native of Baar, Switzerland, has 41 points
(four goals, 37 assists) and 48 penalty minutes in 128
NHL career games but was a healthy scratch of late with
Montreal. "This is the business. This is the way it is,"
Diaz said Monday on a conference call. "As a player you
want to play as much as you can and you want to help you
team." Diaz joins a Canucks blue-line that has suffered a
number of injuries in recent weeks, with both Christopher
Tanev and Kevin Bieksa currently out of the lineup. "As a
sportsman, as a hockey player, you respect everything
(teams) do," he said. "(The Canadiens) always treated me
good. They helped me learn a lot things to play in the
NHL. "Im really excited for the new opportunity."
Meanwhile, Weise never seemed to fit into the plans of
Canucks head coach John Tortorella. The Winnipeg native
had three goals, nine assists and 42 penalty minutes in
44 games this season, mostly while playing on the fourth
line. "II think I can bring a physical presence to the
(Canadiens)," said Weise.dddddddddddd "Im a good skater
and I work hard and my success is down low and hanging
onto pucks and being physical and trying to get to the
hard areas to score goals. "Im not sure where Im going to
fit in just yet. Im just looking forward to coming in and
trying to play hard and trying to find a spot." In 162
career NHL games, the 25-year-old has 10 goals, 16
assists and 185 penalty minutes. Weises name had been
mentioned in trade speculation in recent weeks, but
Mondays deal still caught him off guard. "(The trade)
comes as a little bit of a shock to me," said Weise. "I
think any time you hear rumours around you think about it
but theres so many (rumours) that go around and you just
never know. "I didnt put too much thought into it ... I
was shocked when I heard about it today." Weise was
expected to arrive in Montreal on Monday night and
practise with the Canadiens on Tuesday morning, while
Diaz was set to meet up with his new teammates the same
day in Boston. Both Weise and Diaz will get a chance to
face their old teams this week when the Canadiens host
the Canucks on Thursday night at the Bell Centre.
