Gentlemen,

So far I found plenty of Heer,Waffen-SS,and Luftwaffe servicemen being recommended for the Knight's Cross,Oak Leaves, and higher up but were not offically awarded to them or downgraded to the German Cross in Gold. I only know one Kriegsmarine U-boat sailor by the name of Fischer, who served aboard the U-124, was recommended for the Knight's Cross by Commander Wilhelm Schulz. Fischer was awarded the German Cross in Gold instead. Can you think of any other examples of Kriegsmarine servicemen being recommended for the Knight's Cross, the Oak Leaves,or higher but were not awarded to them? Thank you.

                                                                         Sincerely,

                                                                         Edward

Gentlemen,

Although I don't have any proofs and sources my best possible nominees for the Oak Leaves are K.Kapt. Hermann Opdenhoff of the Schellboots and K.Kapt. Jurgen Osten who commanded three U-boats ( U-61,U-106,&U-861). I'm rather surprised that Opdenhoff didn't get anymore important awards after his awarding of the Knight's Cross on May 16,1940 while commanded the S-31 up to his death in action on March 1945 while commanding the 2nd Schnellboot Flottilla. He held that post since Feb. 22,1944. He did got his Schnellboot badge very shortly after his Knight's Cross award in 1940.  Jurgen Osten was awarded his Knight's Cross on March 26,1941 while commanded the U-106. He didn't get anymore awards from his country for the duration of WWII. From Sept. 2,1943 to May 29,1945 he commanded the U-861. He sank a few more ships and ran through the Allied blockade from Germany to Japan and from Japan back to Germany. Osten's actions while commander of the U-861 should have gotten him the Oak Leaves. This is only pure guestwork of mine.

                                                                                  Sincerely,

                                                                                  Edward
