Hello,

I've been doing some research and have come across information that I would like to share here.

This info. has found its way to me over the past months and I was not 'actively' seeking it - it just 'fell into my lap'.

First of all there was no Pfalzburg - as mentioned in the ghost written book, there was another full rigger named the Oldenburg (now the Suomen Joutsen and preserved in Finland).  Noted in Jost Metzler's "The Laughing Cow"). Jost Metzler, who later commanded U-69, was taken under Prien's wing when an ordinary sailor aboard the sailing ship Oldenburg. He relates at the beginning of his book "The Laughing Cow: The Story Of U-69" how his relationship with Prien was "very strained" at first, and how Prien, as a young seaman, "could on occasion be very hard and unjust." Later they would become good friends.

Just this past month, I was suddenly told about an auction of many of the belongings of Prien through Hermann Historica.  I had saved the photographs of what I found relevant and the information.  Much of it was letters and postcards to his mother and sister.   In searching the photographs, I could piece together some of his family:

Sister:

Liselotte Bohstedt (b. Margarete Elisabeth-Charlotte Bohstedt)
Baptized on 24. April. 1918
30. October. 1917 - ?.?.?

Brother:

Hans-Joachim Bohstedt (Achim) L.z.S. - U 389
27. June. 1920 - 5. Oct. 1943 (23 yrs)

Mother:

Margarete Bohstedt (Born - Clara Emma Margarete Schalck)
20 April 1882 - 23. March. 1954 (71 yrs)

Father:
? Prien

Stepmother:
? ?

Stepfather:

Max ? Gustav Bohstedt

There, in this information that was being auctioned off, was also mentioned a HAPAG liner "Olivia" - I had contacted Deutsches Schiffartsmuseum and asked them about an Olivia.  I got the response that there was no HAPAG liner Olivia, but there was a HAPAG liner Oliva.  He served on this before serving on the San Francisco.

I just wanted to share this information with everyone here - I have the captions for the letters though not all translated - some were translated on Herman Historica's site.  If anyone would like me to post more on this, I will. I feel it is deserved after what was done with his life with regards to the ghost written book.

Sincerely,

Prien
