OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Baltimore Ravens and tight end
Dennis Pitta reached agreement on a five-year contract
Friday. According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun,
the deal is worth $32 million. Pitta, Baltimores fourth-
round pick in 2010, was set to become an unrestricted
free agent when free agency starts March 11. "I could not
be more excited to remain a Baltimore Raven," Pitta said
in a statement. "There is no better organization or fan
base in sports. To be given the opportunity to continue
my career here is incredible. This organization drafted
me and has always stood by me — especially during my
difficult recovery last season. And for that, I am
extremely grateful." Pitta has become a favourite option
of quarterback Joe Flacco in recent seasons. He missed
most of 2013 while recovering from a dislocated and
fractured hip, but he returned to catch 20 passes for 169
yards and a touchdown in the final four games. He had 61
catches for 669 yards and seven touchdowns during the
2012 regular season and then added 14 catches for 163
yards and three touchdowns in the playoffs in helping the
Ravens win the Super Bowl. "Dennis creates a number of
mismatch problems for defences," Ravens general manager
Ozzie Newsome said. "He makes it tough on them. And
because of that, he really helps out our wide receivers.
"Opponents have to always pay attention to where he lines
up and where his routes take him. Dennis is also a big
target with very good hands, and his presence in the red
zone is very important to us." Without Pitta for most of
2013, Baltimore finished just 18th in passing offence.
"It was obvious when Dennis was out last year that we
really missed him," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "We
all admire how he fought back from the hip injury and
helped us down the stretch. Having Dennis as a part of
the Ravens now and in the future is exciting news for us.
"Dennis has a large catch radius and can snatch the ball
in traffic. Not only is he a reliable player, but he is
an outstanding person as well. Having a weapon like
Dennis makes everyone on our offence better." The deal
came a day after the Ravens terminated the contracts of
three-time Pro Bowl fullback Vonta Leach and six-year
linebacker Jameel McClain.

. Those cheers seemed more special this
time because the captains run on Broadway could soon be
over. The adoration surely sounded much nicer to Callahan
than all the recent trade talk.

the staff to Mark Buehrles 10. Win-loss record is an
antiquated stat, sure, but win total is generally an
indication of a pitchers ability to work deep into games,
enough to be personally affected by the result.

.Bacca took advantage of Cristian Alvarezs
hesitation to head a lobbed pass over the goalkeeper and
then used his feet to roll the ball into an empty net in
the eighth minute. The Colombia strikers 10th goal pulled
him level with Lionel Messi as the leagues third-leading
scorers, far behind Cristiano Ronaldos runaway tally of
23 goals. What concerns me heading into the fifth week of
football is the pace of the game and consequently its
entertainment value.   Maybe it is because in NFL
football the money is so big and they have such an
immense population base to work with the entertainment
value is never evaluated, but in this league it always
is.   The two reasons for concern are penalties and the
challenge system.   Penalties have hurt games this year.
In week 4 there were 90 penalties called for 773 yards.
That averages to 23 a game and 193 yards. Too much.
Each game had at least 20 penalties when you combine two
teams and six of eight teams last week had 10 or more.
Now you can blame the refs but they do have to call what
they see because if they dont they wont be CFL refs for
much longer.   I thought Hamilton coach Kent Austin
summed it up the best talking about the Tiger-Cats 10-7
loss in Calgary. In reference to his player he had the
quote "they are paid to perform, they are paid to produce
and they are paid to win."   They are also paid to take
as few penalties as possible to perform, produce and win.
In the world of excess penalties and consequence of
boring football it is not about referees, it is about the
quality of the player. And that is truly both sides of
the border. Teams lost seven full lengths of the football
field last week. Too much.      &nbbsp;            Next
concern is the challenge system on pass interference and
other situations.dddddddddddd I dont like it.   I am all
for it in playoff football to a high degree but it takes
too long to go through the process and when not reversed
seems like a waste of time. And the referee has no choice
but to get it right in under as little time as possible.
I do remember the Alouettes and Ticats last year and if
there was a challenge system it would have been Montreal
playing Saskatchewan in the 101 Grey Cup. That was a
playoff game and that is my main point.   Playoffs only,
and if you want to challenge the coin flip to start the
game, do it!   Playoff football must be perfect, regular
season football not so much.   I am optimistic as the
season moves on the challenge system will reach as close
to perfection as possible as defensive backs adjust and
perfect their craft. But man and I have to be honest
here, it grinds the game to the point I am grinding my
teeth.   The quality of football is about the quality of
the football player.   Great players produce exceptional
games because they know how to play the game as close to
perfect as possible. Right now its far from perfect and
here is hoping it changes fast.    Nothing is more
important to the football fan, and that includes me too.
