CHICAGO -- Taj Gibson led five players in double figures
with 23 points and the Chicago Bulls brushed off a poor
offensive first half to rally for an 89-77 victory over
the Indiana Pacers on Monday night. Kirk Hinrich had 18
points on 7-for-13 shooting, Mike Dunleavy scored 13,
Jimmy Butler 12 and Joakim Noah added 10 points, eight
rebounds and eight assists. Gibson, who was 9 for 15 from
the field, also had eight rebounds in 32 minutes off the
bench. The Bulls (40-31) pulled within two percentage
points of Toronto (39-30) for third place in the Eastern
Conference. The win also prevented Indiana from clinching
the Central Division title on Chicagos home court. The
Pacers are looking to win consecutive division crowns for
the second time since joining the NBA (1998-99 and 1999-
2000). The Pacers, who were led by Paul Georges 21
points, have dropped three straight and six of eight on
the road. Theyve lost four of five at the United Center,
including both visits this season. The Pacers earned a
91-79 victory over the Bulls on Friday night at Indiana.
With the NBAs top two defensive teams on the court,
points figured to come at a premium, and that certainly
was the case in the first half. Neither team managed to
score 20 in either of the first two quarters, and the
Pacers took a 34-33 halftime lead when George Hill (12
first-half points) hit a 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left.
The Bulls were 14 of 44 (31.8 per cent) from the field in
the first half, including 1 for 10 on 3-pointers. Perhaps
the most entertaining portion of the half came when the
crowd got on Pacers centre Roy Hibbert for an apparent
flop, a hot topic between the teams in recent days. On
the play, Hibbert was fouled by Noah as he was beginning
to go up for a shot attempt. While there definitely was
enough contact to warrant a foul, it appeared to be
light. Hibbert, though, dropped to the court flailing as
if he had been hit by a flagrant foul. After the replay
was shown on the scoreboard, the crowd began to boo. Noah
stood off to the side with a big grin on his face.
Following Fridays game in Indiana, Gibson accused the
Pacers of flopping, and it was still the topic of
conversation at the morning shootaround for both teams.
"I mean, I havent taken a charge in probably four years,"
Hibbert said at the shootaround. "Hes entitled to his
opinion. Im just going to go out there and play hard."
The Bulls finally got into an offensive rhythm in the
third quarter, starting the second half with a 16-5 run
to take a 49-39 lead. A few minutes later, Indiana had
cut the lead to 55-49 and George had the ball on a fast
break ahead of the field. Hinrich, though, caught him
from behind and looked as if he was going to give an
intentional foul. Instead, Hinrich stripped the ball and
the Bulls headed in the opposite direction as George
complained that he was fouled. The Bulls completed the
four-point swing on Gibsons dunk to make it 57-49 with
just more than 4 minutes left in the third quarter. The
Bulls took a 64-56 lead into the fourth after scoring 31
points in the third. They had balanced scoring in the
quarter with Dunleavy and Hinrich each tallying seven
points. Carlos Boozer, Butler and Gibson added five
apiece. The Bulls were never seriously threatened in the
fourth and held on for a relatively comfortable win.
NOTES: The Bulls posted a 110-94 victory in Indianas only
previous visit to the United Center this season on
Nov.16. Indiana won both games at home as the teams split
the season series. ... Pacers coach Frank Vogel when
asked if Hibbert was the NBA Defensive Player of the
Year: "Hands down. Hes the best rim-protector on the best
defence in the league. I think thats who the award should
go to. Ill be very disappointed if he doesnt get the
award this year." Hibberts main competition could be
Noah, who received the endorsement of Rockets coach Kevin
McHale a couple of weeks ago. . Former Bull C.J. Watson
missed the game with a right hamstring strain.

Off-Season Game Plan examines a team facing some
challenging times as GM Bryan Murray tries to put
together a roster for next season. Perhaps the first
challenge facing Murray is that its expected he will be
moving out Jason Spezza, a premier point producer who is
about to enter the final year of his contract.

of tidbits from around camp: Hutchison impressive The
Blue Jays are being cautious when talking about their
young arms but internally, excitement is building over
the way Drew Hutchison is looking and performing this
spring.PHILADELPHIA -- Darrun Hilliard watched intently
Saturday night as the Philadelphia 76ers retired Allen
Iversons number at the Wells Fargo Center. Less than 24
hours later, in the same arena, he tried to recreate the
magic of his all-time favourite player. Hilliard scored a
career-high 26 points and No. 8 Villanova set a school
record for regular-season wins with a 73-56 victory over
Marquette on Sunday. "AI was the man," Hilliard said.
"That was my favourite player. Seeing him go out and be
the smallest guy on the court and doing what he did with
everything against him, it was something I looked up to.
So its pretty cool to be in this building." Josh Hart
added 13 points and JayVaughn Pinkston had 11 points and
seven rebounds for the Wildcats (26-3, 14-2 Big East),
who have won four straight and 10 of 11. The Wildcats had
never won 26 regular-season games in the 95-year history
of the program. Villanova won 25 games four previous
times, most recently in 2008-09, a season it reached the
Final Four. Deonte Burton scored 13 points for Marquette
(17-12, 9-7) and Todd Mayo finished with 11 points and
five rebounds. "I was proud of that effort," Villanova
coach Jay Wright said. "I know Marquettes a good, hungry
team and they play hard. Its hard to match that level."
Playing in the home of the 76ers Hilliard almost looked
like an NBA guard with the kind of show he put on for the
fans. The 6-foot-6 junior guard had 18 points in first
half, shot 5 for 8 from 3-point range for the game and
set his career high with a dazzling drive that put the
Wildcats up 66-47 with 4:58 left. Hilliards previous
career high of 25 points came in an upset win over
Syracuse last season -- also at the Wells Fargo Center.
"Darrun was on fire today," Hart said. "When you have
someone whos 5 for 8 from 3s, the defence is really
focusing in on him so that allowed me to get open shots."
Villanova was 12 of 29 from 3-point range. Trying to make
a late push to get into the NCAA tournament for the ninth
straight year, Marquette came in having won five of six,
including an important two-point victory over Georgetown
on Thursday. But the Golden Eagles never threatened to
upset the Wildcats, shooting just 4 for 15 from 3-point
range and 16 for 25 from the free throw line. They
committedd 15 turnovers.dddddddddddd "I would say the
number one disappointment is we didnt play as hard as we
have to play on the road to beat a team as good as
Villanova," Marquette coach Buzz Williams said. After
falling behind by 11 points at halftime, Marquette made
just one field goal through the first 5 minutes of the
second half to allow Villanova to open a 48-29 lead.
Villanova led by double digits the rest of the way to
move one full game ahead of No. 9 Creighton for first
place in the Big East. The Wildcats only two conference
losses have come to Creighton, which fell out of first
place after losing to Xavier on Saturday. "I dont think
theyre going to win our league or theyre eighth in the
country based on one number," Williams said. "I think
theyre really good in each phase of the game but I also
think they play for one another. I think they play
incredibly hard and I think they play with great spirit."
Hilliard and Hart combined to score Villanovas first 20
points, before Pinkston and Tony Chennault scored the
next nine for the Wildcats. Daniel Ochefu then forced a
steal, ran ahead of the pack and had a transition dunk to
cap a 17-4 run and send Villanova to a 31-18 lead with
3:18 left in the first half. The Golden Eagles cut the
deficit to six points a couple of minutes later, but
Hilliard scored five straight points to close the half,
hitting two free throws after Williams was called for a
technical foul and drilling a 3-pointer with 2 seconds
remaining. "I thought that series was important for us,"
Wright said. "We were struggling a little and they were
coming back." The Wildcats led 36-25 at halftime despite
foul-plagued starting guards Ryan Arcidiacono and James
Bell playing just 6 and 5 minutes, respectively. Neither
scored in the first half and Bell, the teams leading
scorer, didnt score at all and remains six points shy of
1,000 points for his career. "In the first half, when we
were playing without James Bell and Ryan Arch, I thought
our energy level actually went up," Wright said. "I
thought we were actually a quicker team. And then those
guys were really fresh in the second half. "Weve been
trying to build our depth throughout the season and that
was really important to have that first half like that."
