I've heard Prien was a bit of a martinet true?

From what I have read Prien knew how to have a good time - like any sailor, you just need to read about the 'red cabbage' incident - but yes, he was something of a stickler for the rules.

That said, when you were running a very tight ship - and the U-boats were very tight ships - the disciplinarian who stuck by the rules and yet remained fair to the crew would always be the best suited for the job. I wouldn't want to be a crewman on a vessel where anyone could get away with anything - especially when everyone had a particular role to play that more often than not meant the safety of his crewmates.

On board, you had to play by the rules - any slacking could mean an instant cold death not only for the slacker but for forty-odd other men. Off-shore, I am sure Prien was a little more easy going. I don't think he would have tolerated the crew pissing on the car like the Captain in Das Boot did though!
